The myth of Finnish design was mainly built in 1950s. The Arts and Crafts Society was established already in 1875. This society maintained education which led many famous Finnish designers like Timo Sarpaneva, Kaj Franck and Tapio Wirkkala to success internationally. The legend of a tiny northern country which battled against the forces of nature and the pressure of history created the base for design markets which didn t lack of mythic elements like snow, ice, forests and lakes, bright summer nights and Finnish sisu (spunk). The museum was established in 1873 as a collection for the arts and crafts school. It was founded in Helsinki, Finland where it s still operating. The building where the museum is located was designed by architect Gustaf Nystr m in 1894. The Design Museum has been supported since 1989 by the Foundation of the Museum of Art and Design.
