Hex nuts

There’s not much information on when and why hex nuts were invented but hardware specialists are of the opinion that with the evolving of smaller and more sophisticated machinery, the conventional square nuts may have been more space-consuming and difficult to tighten in the reduced spaces. Hence, the angled or hex nuts were manufactured to save space, provide more ease of tightening in restricted spaces and also for better grip in automated environments.
Hex nuts or hexagonal, six-sided nuts are very commonly used in construction, carpentry, wood-working, automotive, pipes and tubes, engineering and machinery applications. They are known for providing a secure and strong grip and are able to withstand immense torque while tightening. They have internal threads and are available in standard sizes and dimensions in compliance with international norms for various requirements. Hex nuts are made of various materials including stainless steel, bronze, brass, aluminum, titanium, galvanized iron, etc with a range of finishes like chrome or zinc plating, serrated edges, matte or glossy finish etc.
Machine Screw Nuts: are usually made of bronze and are used in heavy duty machinery. They may require the addition of certain compounds to facilitate tightening and prevent seizing.
Marine grade Hex Nuts: are usually made of stainless steel and find extensive use in marine environments like ships, boats, yachts etc where long periods of immersion in water interspersed with exposure to salt, sunlight, snow, etc are required. Additionally, a nylon insert may also be available with this type of hex nut to improve torque, holding power and resistance to damage of threads while tightening.
Small-sized: These specially designed small-sized hex nuts are useful in areas where there is limited space for tightening wrenches. Stainless steel hex nuts, when used with screws or bolts in the same material ensure that there is no corrosion or weakening of the nuts and the joint.
Heavy-duty: Larger sized, heavy duty hex nuts in galvanized metals with longer threads are useful in heavy duty applications as longer bolts can be used for firmer grip. These are especially useful in dockyards, snow-removal machines and agricultural equipments.
Jam/Fine thread Hex nuts: are very handy when the working space is limited and there’s not much room to maneuver the tightening wrench. Many technicians use two or more jam nuts together to improve the grip.
Washer hex nuts: These nuts have a star-edged washer attached to them which is free-spinning, thus making it a good locking-assembly system.
Serrated-flange design: This special design allows the hex nuts to remain tightly in position once they are fixed and the flange feature helps to prevent moisture from entering the body of the locking assembly.
